Common Questions

Turning 65 FAQ

When exactly should I sign up for Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is 7 months long — starting 3 months before the month you turn 65, including your birthday month, and ending 3 months after. Enrolling in the 3 months before your birthday month means your coverage starts on the first of your birthday month.
What if I'm still working and have employer health insurance?
If you or your spouse has employer coverage from a company with 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalty. However, once that coverage ends, you have an 8-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up. Every situation is different — this is exactly where speaking with a licensed agent is essential.
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is the federal program. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative offered by private insurers that bundles A & B — and often adds dental, vision, hearing, and prescription coverage — usually at a $0 or very low premium. Many Arizonans find Medicare Advantage plans offer better value, but the right choice depends on your doctors, medications, and health needs.
Do I need Part D if I don't take any prescriptions?
It's strongly recommended to enroll in a Part D plan even if you don't currently take medications. If you go without creditable drug coverage and later need prescriptions, you could face a permanent late enrollment penalty — 1% of the national base premium for every month without coverage.
How much does a Medicare consultation cost?
Nothing. Our licensed agents are compensated by the insurance companies, not by you. There is never a fee to compare plans, ask questions, or enroll.
Can I change my Medicare plan after I enroll?
Yes. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 – December 7 each year, during which you can change your plan. There are also Special Enrollment Periods for qualifying life events. Your agent can help you review your options every year.
